2026.09.2307:36:05UTC+00French Private Sector Performs Better than Expected

The S&P Global France Composite PMI rose to 51.2 in September 2026 from 48.5 in August, beating market expectations of 48.7, according to flash estimates. The data signaled a return to growth in the country’s private sector at the strongest pace in more than two years, ending a prolonged period of contraction that had persisted since the start of the year. The recovery was driven by a rebound in services, where activity expanded at its fastest rate in seven months. In contrast, manufacturing output growth slowed and remained only marginal. Overall demand improved slightly, with new orders increasing for the first time in ten months, though only modestly. Export orders continued to decline, but the fall was the smallest recorded so far this year. Private sector employment edged down again, marking a fifth consecutive monthly decrease.
