The NZX 50 fell 54 points, or 0.4%, to close at 13,822 on Wednesday, retreating from the previous session’s peak—the highest level since September 7—and unwinding gains from the last two trading days. The market was dragged lower by weakness in technology, utilities, and industrial stocks.

Investors continued to digest comments from RBNZ Governor Anna Breman, who warned that inflation could rise further if elevated oil prices persist. This reinforced expectations that the central bank may raise interest rates at its upcoming meeting, adding to risk aversion.

Sentiment was also cautious ahead of the Trump–Xi summit, where artificial intelligence and tariffs are expected to feature prominently on the agenda. However, a further pullback in oil prices helped limit losses, as easing tensions in the Middle East and hopes for renewed US–Iran talks reduced some geopolitical risk.

Among the notable decliners were Gentrack Group (-5.0%), Freightways Group (-3.4%), Mercury NZ (-1.6%), Meridian Energy (-1.6%), Mainfreight (-1.5%), Contact Energy (-1.2%), and EBOS Group (-0.9%).
